Synopsis

On a whim, aspiring comic magician Alex Kazam and his partner aspiring musician/apprentice magician, Bella Muerta, decide to enter a movie competition. They invite aging hippie/K-8 teacher friend Mr. M to be director because he can put the $225 entrance fee on credit. Hard drive failure means they have to cobble together old promo news clips from the web to make a trailer minutes before deadline.
So begins an exploration of the life of Canadian magicians from the perspective of a young comedy magician struggling to make his way in the world of conjuring. Without funds, crew or equipment they fight hoards of werewolf, vampire & zombie flicks combined with good docs to complete their movie.

My name is Michael, and I've known Kazam since he was 2, back then he was just Alex. I've always had a flare for film making and directing, starting with a video I did with my friend Danny Marks, host on 91.1 Jazz FM. I would really like to share Kazam's story, trying to make it in the real world that is show buisness, and not just what it's hyped up to be. Wish us luck!

I started doing magic when I was 6, got interested in film when I was 11. There is a lot of overlap between what a magician does and what a film does. A magician, is essentially an actor playing the role of a magician.

I'm a singer, songstress, magician, model, and overall bubbly and wacky person. I started doing concept directing & artistic directing on photography shoots at 17. I have always loved enjoying films, and look at all the music videos I've done & will do as short-films, there has to be a story, drive, an intention, otherwise, what's the point of doing anything for a camera??

I'm not sure what this documentary is supposed to be about. Perhaps if you'd really like to make this movie, I would suggest having a clear vision communicated in the trailer - a voice over to guide the story line or even statements on the screen to give us a little more insight as to what kind of movie we can expect.

My only major concern is the spelling error in the opening titles. It put me off right away. I love magic, and the concept. I do hope this project moves forward. Good luck!

interesting concept but I cant say i would pay to go see it. I mean, comedy magician = cool, "struggles in finding his way as single child of immigrant mom"...I think you lost me there.

Good beginning on 2 day notice, no time, no equipment, and only video on Kazam's corrupted hard drive. Cinecoup may not come around again.. so we jumped in.Best to come with time, love and money for production. Need others to keep it alive.

There just isn't a story here. Only slight saving grace is the general likeability of the lead. But there is absolutely no direction. Which bring me to your "director" Michael M. Can't help but notice you have been showing up on a lot of other projects ratings. Usually giving somewhere between a 1 and 4.... I understand that it is hard to be losing. But rating others negatively will only distract you from your projects failure for so long.
I think, Alex, you would be best to find a director who knows how to direct. Who can take your personality and talent and structure it into something marketable. But I feel as long as you are attached to Michael M, his lack of talent, vision, and negative attitude towards others, your career is in jeopardy. Just a thought.

First off.... I really admire the fact that you are pushing your art and wanting to make this film.
Secondly... Don't make this film.

I know it sounds super harsh but I only say this because I can see this being a huge flop. Here are some reasons so you know I'm not just some petty jerk from another team or something:

- Magic: What films about magic have worked? Maybe "Magic Camp" in 2012? That worked because it was a school of magic (so therefore there was more than just one dude on camera) and of course it made kids think there really is a Hogwarts. There was that god awful Mitchell and Webb movie "Magicians" in 2007 which flopped because nobody cares about magicians that aren't using their trade for deceit and self gain (a la Prestige)
Other videoed magic explorations have been done via TV specials, that masked magician guy, David Blaine, Criss Angel and so forth. This feels like something that would fit more so with the latter.
- The camera work: The way you filmed this trailer appears to be done pretty much entirely on cell phones. Which is fine, it's a trailer and you don't want to be pumping shit tons of moolah into a red camera to film some card tricks. But this also brings up the question: if you won... what would you spend the money on? Obviously if this is the sort of nature of your film, you'd probably want to go a doc style anyway.... probably best to get candid moments with audience reactions, be it on the stage or on the street.... so using shitty cellphone cams might not be a bad option... because this method gives the feeling of the footage being real and candid.
- The guy laughing behind the camera. This guy sounds like someone pitch shifted down Spongebob's laugh. It's annoying and so loud that it sounds forced... also sounds like he's the only guy in the crowd.

This one's gonna be tough to hear... so my apologies:
Your magic sucks bro. There's like one trick in the whole trailer and it's annoying thanks to hip hop Spongebob's laugh and the fact that it goes on forever! Riding a massive unicycle must be difficult to master but it doesn't even look like you have fully mastered the thing. The fire juggling can be seen at any busker fest. It's cool that you met what appears to be Teller, but why throw cards in his face? Even that Rahat guy on youtube has more compelling magic tricks. Hone those skills Alex!

Overall, I think this would make for one of the worst films ever.
That being said, I admire the passion put forth by Alex Kazam and his crew. I look forward to seeing what comes of Kazam's career he's got a golden personality.... but if there's any magic trick I'd like to see Alex do... it's to make the idea of this being a movie disappear.

It could be an interesting concept by following Kazam around. But to engage audiences for a feature length or even a TV hour, it needs to explain the story arch better than what comes across from the trailer.

like seriously, don't mock real film makers here. This looks like it was shot just for the sake of shooting and pieced together by a 5 yr old, and i hate to say it a 5 yr old can shoot and edit better than this.

I love magic. I love the illusion that surrounds it and the excitement you feel when a trick is performed in front of you. Based upon the footage, I can see why the tagline is "Making Magic in A Real World." To me, this means that a young magician travels around his hometown, or wherever he is, making people's lives a little brighter by making them laugh. He may not be the most talented magician, but he has fun, and the people he performs for do too. If that is the intent, I think they did a good job. However, the trailer provides no insight into what the film is about or what it is exploring. Sure the trailer is composed of numerous home videos, but that adds to the documentary feel. I don't know if Kazam is talented or not; based on the trailer, I would say no. Because there are too many things left unexplained, audiences don't know what to think, and I think that is why this project is doing so poorly.
