Ah 1989, the year I was born!!! What can I say, everything goes on in school. As a fan of teen comedies and drama, Grade Nine exercises a balance of both, with funny dialogue, quirky characters, and a dose that good old human condition shown through conflicts and promising set ups. I never experienced Grade Nine like this but I do know what it is like putting up with the confusion and anger of the young.

this is the only candidate that demonstrates grounded, mature, filmmaking, that doesn't take a heavy handed approach, or try too hard to appear cinematic. This is a simple story told in an appropriate way. Its clear the filmmakers can make this movie in a heart beat and they wont need much help or super vision once they get some funding. All the other films are gonna be struggling to not fall into a cheesy over-produced cliche. This one is safe and succesfull. Of all the videos i have watched this is the only project that has meaningful scenese and interactions between its characters. It is the most ethnic and canadian. It is an all ages film. It's clearly the best. safest. and most warm hearted and distinguished of the projects.

I believe stories about the coming of age (and all it's misadventures) is a theme that has been explored a great deal. It would take a very unique vision to tell the story that I see in grade 9 in a new and exciting way. There may be some laughs but after seeing Napoleon Dynamite it is hard to see how the same charm and creativity can be generated in this film. Does it have what it takes?

I grew up in a violent small Northern Canadian town in the 1980s. It wasn't like this at all in junior and senior high. Small town people are poor and couldn't afford D and D, wresting suits and their school gym was 1/4 the size. Bullies didn't wear studs, they wore flannel lumberjack shirts with a down vest in winter. The only ones who could afford D and D, were the drug dealers. All girls had bangs and flipped back hair orange from "sun-in." All boys had parts down the middle of their long hair with a mullet and sides "feathered." Overall, this is a good story, I think, but the set and costume needs a lot of work for authenticity.

I reviewed this a while ago but now that I have seen your missions I'm giving your team a new ranking based on the potential success the film could garner from the skill the team shows.

The acting in the trailers (Both redux and concept) is inadequate. The dialogue portrayal lacks any bit of emotion and when they try to be witty or upset/frustrated it comes across as cheesy and dull like they were reading a piece of paper. I know they are only younger and new to acting but that is not a legitimate excuse. I'm not sure if this was because of a lack of time for casting or you had a lack auditions. If this does become a feature film the acting will definitely drag the films ratings down.

As for the story it seems focused although a little far fetched. although it does have the unique bully and nerd becoming friends it may not be the most fresh content out on the market. Another gripe about the story is that it doesn't fit in with the latest generation which is a turn off for many. The time frame isn't very well connected to our generations society making it harder for the audience to get emotionally engaged and feel emotionally relatable to any of the characters. I understand it's a blast from the past to your team but what about your consumers. Will they find it engaging? That's the luck of the draw.

The editing in the film was generally okay. Multiple times I felt like the scene ended too fast leaving me feel unfulfilled. You need to let the mood briefly sink in and stay focused, The editing from scene too scene made me feel confused leaving me feeling different things pulling me out of the experience that the trailer is supposed to catch you by. The choppy editing also shows how the vast amount of content that couldn't fit in to the time constraints giving off this cluttered vibe. This is especially apparent towards the end of the trailer.

I'm confused to why you listed this as a comedy... I didn't even sense any areas that were trying to come off as humorous. If there is humor in the trailer it may be something a younger audience would pickup as a pun or a funny wordplay. but a general movie goer may see it as lame attempts to "lol the audience"
Summary:

Pro:
Quality cinematography.
Unique plot premise.
A/V quality.

Con:
Choppy/disengaging editing.
Flat dialogue.
unrelatable plot.
Generational gap in audience.
What humor?

Where are all the girls with the big hair, polka dots, shoulder pads, crazy patterns, ugly sweaters? I remember zero tolerance on bad behaviour during my 1980s education. Maybe a modern day issue set in the past? Maybe I was fortunate to only remember the 80s as safe and fun with great tunes and block parent. My memory was the bad kids smoked on the other side of the street and the worst thing they did was usually just verbal harassment like "smell ya later". So I wouldn't say this was a good "flash back" from what I remember to be reality. It is well shot, acted, plus funny and serious at the same time. I'm not sure the nerds would be interesting enough to capture me for a whole movie but then again revenge of the nerds worked at one time!

PG13, its the rating that matters and for Grade Nine you’ve got it! Out of all the films you have the lowest rating making it family friendly and I applaud that. Along with the fan support PG13 gives you the number one spot in this competition. That doesn’t mean that the plot can be overdone, or similar to other films it just means that you have the best chance to win. Grade Nine seems like a child friendly version of Super Bad with the Napoleon dynamite feel. Its nerdy cast and female love interest parallels the characters of Superbad. That said the style and distinctly Canadian feel gives this film the number one chance to succeed outside the contest.

There are some great moments in this trailer. Great chemistry within the team and impressive young talent. It's a simple concept but one that will engage it's audience and allow the audience to fall in love with the characters. I do think the original trailer could use some tweaking. I felt that there was a lot of start-stopping in this trailer - I would limit this to once or twice in a trailer. Also, felt that the music could have been more powerful and used to thread the entire trailer together better. There were also some cheezy acting scenes " you tell your brother that dez was looking for him" for example, that would probably be better cut out of the trailer. It's a promising team and trailer and has a good mix of comedy and raw emotion that will make for an entertaining final product.

There is a lot to love about this movie. Capitalizing on the geek hero culture that "Big Bang Theory" and "Napoleon Dynamite" has brought about is a solid base for any film.

Jay has shown that he can get stellar performances from his cast and the production quality of the original trailer and all the missions has been consistently high and clean. Coupled with a great use of soundtrack and 80's pop culture, this movie would be very easy to turn into a big screen production.

My New Official Review of : Grade Nine

I enjoy the misfits of geeks who are basically considered on the lower end of societies food chain. But I wouldn't count them out yet!

It's an intriguing comedy but showcasing serious struggles in the Ninth Grade with the classic "Fulton School" which I think we can all relate to.

I found this to be of interest. Picking Fulton School is most likely a fluke, but this is where I went to school in Vernon, B.C. from Grade 7 -10.

Good old Clarence Fulton Jr High School in Polson Park. Believe it or not, Mr. Fulton was an actually teacher ( it since been dismantled in the park).

Owlbear Productions closely resembles the life and times during school years.

It could easily be any Junior High School meaning some things never really age with time.

The Character AJ meeting rough and tough Jodi is sure to make this film interesting. Jodi teaches AJ a few new rules in the peaking order of things.

Writer/Director Jay Rathor gives us an insight on how we look at school violence and it's relationship to Bullying throughout our society as a whole.

Grade Nine will bring the seriousness of bullying to front stage and possibly we should see this crew into the next step of the Top 5 in Banff.

Hmmm, after the trailer, I was left wondering about the blonde kid in the jean jacket. Was he supposed to be a tough guy who then ends up liking the nerd group? I certainly was not sold on this film, however I did think the storyline with the Indian boy was well presented, and liked the scenes where we got introduced to his extended family. He was the only character in the trailer that I felt was established enough for me to care about.

Definitely looks like it'll be a good look into the teen/high schooler brain as well as societies misconceptions of D&D. I like that. Okay, so the title and logline didn't immediately grab me; however, I remember grade 9 and dungeons & dragons and I had more than my fair share of geeky friends. Hooked, I'm going to watch this movie.
So, I'm prepared for a "rites of passage" movie, by that I mean a story about surrendering to the forces that are stronger than ourselves.
The end will be about accepting our humanity with the moral: ce la vie--that's life.
The small town setting makes it real for me, and the type of "real" movie I would be willing to spend money on (unlike the template schlock coming out of Hollywood).
Good luck!

It was interesting, sometimes I found it hard to follow and i had to watch it twice to get it. I've seen in a couple movies where the bully is feared by the "geeks" and eventually the bully becomes one of the "geeks". Keep developing the film and keep at it! This trailer captured me with the humour, but quickly showed a mature story line about fitting in, about finding your place (culturally, socially, emotionally). It does seem to be a classic nerd vs. the world story, which is perhaps not the most imaginative, but I am very intrigued about what happens to the tough boy who joins the D&D group. His story seemed the most captivating.

Yeah, I'd watch this, I'm still pretty sad Freaks and Geeks was cancelled. Since this seems pretty much like a continuation with some minor revisions to period, cast and directing style, please don't make this 'That 80s Show' with funding.

I think that there are so many things that are relate-able in this movie. Many different people can connect with it on so many different levels. I find humor in it as well as compassionate moments. I think that people young and old will be able to enjoy it for many different reasons. I like this genre and I like the thematic forming around violence, love and angst. I feel like for the protagonist there should be a central thread that can pull us in towards the main plot of violence, besides what is already introduced, at least in this trailer. The eventual film may be too simple in its approach to the subject matter but I can see how in some ways you have risen above the cliches, I hope you can push for/show more. The trailer was well-shot and very well paced.

Strong coming of age story with good acting from the leads and nicely shot. Doesn't beat the audience over the head with the D&D angle, which is refreshing given how so many of the recent LARP movies have overused that element at the expense of creating compelling characters and narrative. If the full features manages to focus on the characters and relationships, I'd go check it out.

I grew up in a small town in Canada and this story hits home. The film seems to really drive home the violence and pressure that anyone who is different, will inevitably face. That violence is never discussed. It is carried over into our adulthood and can influence us for the rest of our lives. Watching this trailer really affected me and I am aching to see to actual film and find out just how this group of kids find their way and possibly even conquer the challenges that face them growing up in such a harsh climate.
In a world where 'jocks' and 'cool kids' reign supreme, it would be refreshing to see the real champions, the 'nerds', rise to the top and change perceptions of what constitutes 'the in crowd'.
I look forward to this film being made and becoming a beacon of hope for so-called misfits, nerds and outcasts. For they are the people that will make change in the world, not those who would denounce them...
Good luck, film makers...

The trailer has captured the important elements of the story without giving up too much . . but just enough to leave us intrigued and out-right impressed. It sure is refreshing to bare witness to good-old-fashioned story-telling (especially when laced with nostalgia).. Whether or not this project finds a space within the silver screen is irrelevant. The story in itself is worth sharing 'by any media necessary. . '

Aside from the D&D angle, which is unfornutately focused (no doubt satirically) on the uninteresting question of whether it is devil worship, this movie seems almost exactly like every other teenager story ever told.

I think this trailer definitely shows promise, but it drifts between what seems to be authentic performances and over-the-top ones (like the bully talking through gritted teeth). I would be very interested to watch the completed film, I would just encourage you aim for the authentic and avoid the tropes.

The concept is well executed. It looks like it'll a quirky drama, but feels like it's playing to a formula, i.e. I've seen these moments in other films before. I suppose most films and stories do repeat themselves, but I was hoping it would go somewhere new.

Hahaha I love the Tolkien references! Great movie from what I can see! It's so relatable to me, growing up being bullied as well as playing D&D/ Magic the Gathering and such. Not the typical "outcast" movie, although there are a few cliche' moments. I like the storyline and the comedy. All in all, fantastic job! Can't wait to see the final product! :)

Great trailer. Perfectly captures the feel of a Canuck high school in the late eighties, replete with torn denim, shell jackets, and some all-around awesomeness. The setting and subject matter set it apart from other coming-of-age flicks. In particular I'm stoked on the fact that the filmmakers seem willing to delve into issues that teen comedies typically shy away from: racism, bullying, and violence (both schoolyard and domestic). There are dashes of Rushmore here, and also early John Hughes. The D&D theme is hilarious, and the use of it as a metaphor for the isolated town as an 'island,' inhabited with all kinds of strange denizens, is something I could really see working in the full feature. Plus the soundtrack to this would obviously be killer, and filled with all the hits of the era.

Could be a fresh approach to a well-worn genre. Hard to say. Rife with cliches, but some novelty. Visually uneven. Angry acting needs to come from a more organic, less dramatic place, or at least be shot in a way that diminishes the inauthenticity (ECU? Smash Zoom?). Well constructed trailer. Careful not to retell "Revenge of the Nerds", "Heathers", "My Bodyguard", "Breakfast Club" or "Napoleon Dynamite". I could go on and on. If you go up against these, you will lose. So steer clear and forge your own path. Study what's been done and why it works, then find a new way to do it. Advice: if you're writing a scene that's familiar to you, throw it out. Apply irony and subtext liberally. Above all, remember this: if the scene is about what the scene is about, you're in deep shit. Hope this helps. this could be a good movie.

I'm already psyched to see this. I've always been a fan of those coming of age stories, like The Sandlot and Wonder Years. As a gamer that was in the ninth grade in 1989 this resonates particularly strong with me though. I think it's an original idea that no one has touched on yet and our hobby can always use good stories and good cinema to help people better understand the love we have for these games. From a gamer's perspective we can laugh and sympathize with kids that were a lot like us when we were growing up, this is our story and I think that's pretty awesome.

The first 23 seconds are amazing. So much is packed in right off the bat - like a real trailer, culminating in the reveal shot of the table laden with minis and dice. Fantastic. The plot threads are then set to the 1:08 point where the natural 20 appears. Great - they’re on a high. Then the conflict and tension are introduced hooking my interest. The black eyes might be a little over the top, but that’s what trailers do.
